Best Places to Visit in Mecca

Bykami November 7, 2024February 19, 2025

Mecca is the land of Islamic history, culture and holy places. Every corner here is the axis of faith and belief of Muslims. Every year millions of Muslims from all over the world come here to visit these holy places. There are several important places in Makkah that provide a source of spiritual solace and renewal of faith for pilgrims.

1. Masjid al-Haram

Masjid al-Haram is the heart of Makkah and the holiest place for Muslims. It is the largest mosque in the world and Kaaba Sharif is located in it. The Kaaba is the center of the Muslim Qiblah, and Muslims around the world pray facing it at the time of prayer.

The reward of one prayer performed in Masjid al-Haram is equal to one hundred thousand prayers, due to which this place is of special importance for worshippers. Pilgrims perform Tawaf here, apart from prayers, which is a sacred act of worship. During Tawaf, Muslims circle the Kaaba seven times and ask Allah for forgiveness and mercy.

2. Place of Abraham

Maqam-e-Ibrahim is a place near the Kaaba inside Masjid al-Haram where Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) worked standing while building the Kaaba. This is the stone on which the footprints of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) are present. This place is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, and it is Sunnah to pray two rak’ahs here after completing Tawaf. For Muslims, this place is a symbol of Hazrat Ibrahim’s sacrifice and love for Allah.

3. Cave “Hara”

Cave Hira is located on top of Jabal Noor and is the place where the first revelation was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) often came here to worship and this is where Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) revealed the first verse of the Quran “Iqra”.

This place is highly respected by Muslims because the first revelation of the Holy Quran began from here. To reach Ghar Hara one has to climb a high mountain top, which is certainly a physical challenge but also a source of spiritual peace and renewal of faith for Muslims.

4. Cave “Sourr”

The “Sourr” Cave is located in Jabal Thor and this place holds an important place in Islamic history. At the time of Hijra, Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ and Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه took refuge here for three days when the Quraysh were chasing them. Allah Almighty weaved a spider’s web at the mouth of the cave and the pigeons laid eggs there, due to which the enemy could not see them. This place reminds Muslims of the love of Rasulullah ﷺ and his sacrifice.

5. Masjid-i-Aisha (Tanaeem)

Masjid Aisha is located in Taneem near Masjid al-Haram and is also known as “Masjid al-Tanaeem”. This place has special significance for those who intend to perform Umrah, as it is Sunnah to put on Ihram for Umrah from here. Hazrat Aisha also wore Umrah from here. By putting on Ihram from Aisha’s mosque and making the intention of Umrah, Muslims gain closeness to God and begin a new spiritual journey.

6. Jabal Arafat

The plain of Arafat is located about 20 kilometers from Makkah and is one of the most important parts of the Hajj. Every year on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, millions of Muslims gather here and celebrate the Day of Arafah. The duty of Waqf Arafa is performed on Jabal Arafat, which is the main pillar of Hajj. This place has special importance for supplication and seeking forgiveness and Allah’s blessings and forgiveness are revealed here.

7. Nimra Mosque

Masjid Nimra is located in Arafat plain and it is the place where the Prophet ﷺ delivered the important sermon during Hajj al-Wada. On the day of Arafah, millions of Muslims gather here and engage in prayer and supplication. Worship performed at this place is considered as a means of getting closer to Allah Ta’ala.

8. Semen

Mina is the main place of Hajj where pilgrims stay and perform the Sunnah of pelting Satan with pebbles. This is the place where Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.) offered the sacrifice of his son Hazrat Ismail (A.S.), and Allah accepted his sacrifice and sent a messenger. The act of pelting Satan with pebbles in Mina encourages Muslims to ward off Satan and strengthen their faith.

9. Jamrat

Jamrat Mina has three pillars called Jamrat and pilgrims throw pebbles at Satan here. Jamrats are a symbol of warding off evil and warding off evil. This place is a symbol of resistance against Satan and following the orders of Allah in Islamic beliefs. For pilgrims, this practice becomes a source of spiritual training and perseverance.

10. Masjid-e-Jin

Masjid-e-Jinn is one of the oldest mosques in Makkah and it is the place where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught the Quran to a group of jinn. This mosque has been named “Masjid-e-Jin” and the incident here is also described in the Quran. For Muslims, this mosque is a proof of the freshness of faith and the truth of the teachings of Islam.

11. Khalid Bin Waleed Mosque

This mosque is one of the few mosques that are attributed to the great commander of Islamic conquests, Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed. This mosque is located outside Makkah and its historical background reminds Muslims of the bravery and devotion of Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed. These places of Makkah are very sacred and respected for every Muslim. These places encourage us to be close to Allah and follow the teachings of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Muslims renew their faith by visiting these places and pray to Allah for forgiveness, mercy, and peace.
